When a computer “something” comes along that blindsides me and gives me a virtual slap in the face, I feel obliged to tell folks about it. “The account you are about to read is real and (unlike Dragnet, the old TV show) the names have not been changed to protect the innocent”.
Gotcha!!
I’m a dark theme guy. I’ve been a dark theme guy since it first became available; I tried it and have never looked back. You can imagine my surprise a couple days ago when my Dark selection suddenly went white for no good reason (or so I thought). I beamed up Windows desktop Personalize in Settings, when to Colors, and reset to Dark. Everything switched back…for a few minutes, then, to my horror, it switched back to Light again!!
Something is afoot here!
I tried Custom from the color selection and set everything to Dark with the same results, it went, then reverted to Light a bit later, so it has to be something else. Off to the Internet to search on the symptoms, and one hit stood out, Power Toys!
Lights Out!
Power Toys is a unique collection of highly useful Windows tools, they have been around for a long time and I’ve had them installed since they first appeared years agio. As it turns out, an updated version had just installed, and I discovered it had a newish feature called “Light Switch” that turned out to be the culprit.

Somehow, this switch came up defaulted to ON and the system responded accordingly, it switched to the Light theme; turn the switch OFF and Darkness prevails!!
Conclusion
Power Toys is certainly worth the effort, its tool complement is superb, and the cost is FREE. Please consider giving it a try but do pay attention to the switch settings!
